Eduard H. B. van Lier was born in Utrecht in 1881 as the son of Lambertus van Lier and his wife Geertruda Elisabeth, née Kronenberg.

 

Education and Places of Work

Van Lier studied medicine in his native Utrecht, where he passed the state examination on 26 June 1908. He received his doctorate from Utrecht University the following year, on 8 June 1909.

After clinical training at the municipal hospital in Utrecht, he initially set up a general medical practice. Additional training enabled him to specialise in gastroenterology. He had been practising as a specialist in gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases in Utrecht, Bilstraat 111 since 1921. He also worked in a medical polyclinic in Utrecht.

 

After 1933

After the German Wehrmacht invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the 59-year-old Eduard H.B. van Lier, his 55-year-old wife, their 27-year-old son Cornelis van Lier, and their 33-year-old daughter-in-law Bernardina Gijsbertha Maria Daamen, took their own lives in Haarlem, North Holland, on 14 May 1940.
